Vol. 5, No. 3 Charlotte College, Charlotte, N. C. December 14, 1953 Pictured above are some C. C. students “enjoying” initiation for Sigma Lambda Chi fraternity. Sorority and Fraternity Initiations Held The week of November 30 through December 4th proved to be quite a hilarious one in the halls of Charlotte College. It was during' this week that the “Sister Scums” and the “Brother Worms” were initiated into Rho Gamma Alpha Sorority and Sigma Lanbe Chi Fraternity, respectively. Something new was added to the sorority initiations this year. All the girls appeared as different comic strip characters. If you failed to see Marjorie Lotshaw as “Mutt” and Peggy Barrett as “Jeff”, or Marjorie Clark as “Dennis thc’ Menace,” or Jan Shetler as “Pappy Yokum,” you really missed the laugh of your life. Beside providing entertainment for all, the sorority pledges con tributed something worthwhile as part of their initiation. The girls sold an ad to the annual, wrote a club song, or did some other proj ect to benefit the student body. On Friday, December4th. a for mal induction ceremony was held for the new sisters. The boys also had a merry time during initiation week. The halls fairly reeked with the smell of onions, lemons and broken eggs. The ME instructor held the chisel against the rusted bolt. He looked a the ME student and said, “When I nod my head you hit it.” They’re burying him at noon today. Support for Team In the coming months C. C. will enter into another season of basket ball, which is the only sport here at C. C. In the years gone by the team has not been as successful as they would liked to have been, but it takes more than the players and the coach to have a good team. A lot of good players, plus a good coach, unite to make a superior team, but most of all they need the support of the student body. It is hard to play your best when there are empty seats where the C. C. students should be. The team is planning a large schedule and most of the home games are going to be played in the Central Gym. This, they hope, will improve the sup port. The boys who are to make up the team have to work hard to win a position on the team. They prac tice hard and late on many nights, and a number of them get up early the next morning and go to work, besides keeping up with their studies. This year C. C. has a good coach and a superior team. So it seems that all the team needs now is the whole support of the student body. If the plan for the cheerleaders can be developed, it will help out a great deal, but it will truly take each and every member of the stu dent body to suport our team. So let’s each plan to see as many of the games as we can, and cheer our team on to a winning year. MARJORIE LOTSHAW A Merry Christmas, And Why? Across the continent and around the world, letters, telegrams, and the spoken word are bringing good cheer to the hearts of men. People everywhere are telling about the grand and glorious things that are taking place in the home. How im portant they are—the sparkle of the tree, the gifts, the children’s delight as they wait in happy an ticipation, the baby’s coo,and Jun ior’s wants, and the general good cheer that permeates the home. Yes, but even the wisest cannot banish a certain wistfulness. It’s Christmas! And the whole world is singing glad tidings of good cheer. Strong young voices everywhere will burst forth into singing; hearts that have been heavy will be light and gay again. Men shut up within themselves will grow mellow and look upon life with a generous spirit. As we hear the hum of carols or the story of Tiny Tim, the whole tone of our living is changed. Even men who are liv ing strenuous lives and will hear no carols, see no sparkling trees, nor receive any gifts, will know it is Christmas; for Christmas is more than a seasonal celebration— it is a fact. Why is Christmas so import ant? What makes it speak to us Come One, Come All This is just a reminder of the Christmas Dance scheduled for De cember 21st in the Central Gym. Unfortunately, we’re having the dance on a Monday night, but perhaps the day of the week won’t cause you to stay home when we tell you that music will be by Johnny Brooks and his orchestra. Johnny and his combo play at the Club Excelsior here in Char lotte. They have played for many of the dances at Myers Park High, and rumors are that they’re “some rhythm-makers.” This will be the first time Charlotte College has engaged a colored band, and they should add a new touch to the dance. So, even if you don’t dance, why not come on over December 21st anytime between nine and one o’clock and enjoy a little music. Don’t forget the time and place, and don’t forget to come. Wish all your friends a Merry Christmas at the dance! of beauty and lure us out of our selves and give us the desire to cheer the hearts of others ? What was behind the glorious, Angelic music that leaped forth from those Judean hills into the hearts ofmen all over the world—“Peace on earth, goodwill toward men.” A Child was born. What sweeter gift could God give to man ? A Son to carry the burdens of our lives; A Counselor to help with all our problems; A Prince to bring peace to our flustered and confused minds; A new hope for those who stand on the realm of despair; A Light for those who walk in dark ness. For Christ was born to set the spark of joy in our breast and fan it into a flame of love. His presence fills the air with a song that echoes down through the night from the heavenly throng. He con quers the hearts of men and causes the heartstrings to tingle with sweet music. Again in 195Sf we shout “Merry Christmas!” And sing with all Mankind— “Joy to the world! The Lord is come; Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room And Heaven and Nature sing. “He rules the world with truth and grace. And make the nations prove The glories of His righteousnes,, And Wonders of His Love.” REV. LEE A. SPENCER Keep The Ball Rolling Charlotte College will once again this year contribute to the program of Greater Charlotte by presenting a basketball team. This year the team will play some of its games in the Central gym, and it is hoped that this will create one kind of interest. Having cheer-leaders to lead the yells and to encourage enthusiasm should create another kind of interest. The basketball team of Char lotte College this year consists of some fine athletes who are more than worthy of your time and sup port. It is only natural that these boys can perform at their best when all the seats are occupied and a display of spirit and pep is present. A well-rounded sports program is a school essential, so let’s all keep the ball rolling by backing whole-heartedly our fine basketball team. EVA WHEELERS.
